| Studies
prove it and people know it --- when we are connected and contribute
to a small group, we feel we belong to the larger congregation and
to the even larger community of believers. An informal and regualr
gathering of a small group of Christian friends is a comfortable place
to tell our stories, listen to others, learn to pray together, and
share care. Small
groups stress relationships: to one another, to God, to the Christian
church, and to newcomers. Living in a connected community with others
is God's plan --- and His gift for us!

A small group is purposely small (5-12 people) so that each member
is a valued and contributing part of the group. Each group determines
its own meeting time and place, frequency of meetings, length of
commitment, and focus. Each small group at Shepherd if unique, but
every small group meets its purpose with the following four components:
Friendship and care for one another
Prayer
Application of God's Word to living
Faith in action by serving others

| Pray
for God's help to find the right fit in a group for you. If you already
know someone in a small group, ask if there's room for you. If you
want or need help to find a group, contact our Small Groups Coordinator,
Anne Afdahl, 651.483.5419, x163, or e-mail
her. |

While every group includes
the four components, groups vary in focus. At the present, Shepherd
has the following kinds of groups:
- Relationship-oriented.
This group's primary focus is on the spiritual and/or social relationships
among its members.
- Content-oriented.
This kind of group's focus is study and discussion.
- Task-oriented. This
group wants to accomplish a defined task, mission, or assignment.
- Need-oriented. Sometimes
called a support group, this focus is around a common need among
the members.

How
can I become a Small Group Facilitator?
If
you're feeling a nudge to become a small group facilitator,
talk to Anne Afdahl, Small Group Ministry Coordinator, about
the Facilitator Training course. You'll learn about the responsibilities,
skills, traits of healthy groups, and resources to help you
know, show and grow Christ's love in a group.
Once
trained, you'll be encouraged and supported as you begin and
continue this life-changing, faith-changing ministry with
a small group. |
